What’s better than the smell of freshly baked Danish? I really can’t think of any other dessert that makes my whole family (no exaggeration here), wait anxiously for the treats to cool down so they can have a taste.

They love it, and so do I. There is absolutely no way we can all have horrible taste, is there?

Cheese Danish Pastry on a white plate.

I am a huge fan of this amazingly delicious cheese Danish. They are unbelievably tasty.

These homemade cheese Danish will most definitely taste way better than those you buy at your local supermarket without really knowing whether they are authentic cream Danish or not.

They will also come in handy when you have a hectic morning (we all know how hectic mornings can get) or are simply pressed for time. We have great pastry recipes, try our croissant muffins as well.

This was inspired by my Croissant Muffin Recipe on this site, and pairs well with Peanut Butter Blossom Gnome Cookies.

    Why this recipe works

A close up of Danish Pastry on a black plate.

Can be used for breakfast, brunch, or dessert.

These cheese Danish are great for breakfast, brunch, or served as a dessert. The flaky distinct dough is a game changer on every table.

I have never had to convince my children to eat their cheese Danish 🙂, they always fly off the plates like a breeze.

If you serve them for breakfast, they can easily be taken to go. Perfect breakfast treat if you ask me. The cheese Danish is also great for serving a crowd.

You can make your favorite flavor

In case you like experimenting in the kitchen like me, you can consider adding in pie filling to make them with more flavor options and shapes as well.

The plates will probably be empty if you make them for your holiday brunches.

    Distinct texture

Even if you are not a fan of wheat, it is hard to resist the flaky and light kind of dough. It is light and melts pleasantly in your mouth.

The sweetened tangy cream cheese and your choice of fruit filling take the delight to another level of deliciousness.

    It is fun to make

I like inviting my children to design their own squares. They usually refer to my recipe books and follow the instructions to make various designs.

It is so much fun to bake and see them anxiously wait for the outcome.

    Why frozen puff pastry?

A bunch of pastry ingredients in glass bowls.

In this recipe, I will use frozen puff pastry. I am not a big fan of store-bought pastries, and I don’t advocate for them but since this particular one is not so easy to make, I prefer to buy it.

You have the option of making your own puff pastry but the process is way too long and it is too much work if you feel like you’re up for the challenge, go for it.

    It is easy to make

Are they really that easy to make? Definitely yes!

This recipe will blow your mind.  It is one of my simplest recipes and it is super cheesy and delicious. The other good thing about it is you’ll only need 5 ingredients, my kind of treat.

The store-bought puff pastry makes it a treat you can make in just about 30 minutes. Quick and easy dessert, right?

This recipe makes the best cheese Danish I have ever tasted.

    How to make cheese Danish

A bowl of egg yolk, cream cheese & sugar with a fork.

Roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle measuring 30 cm by 10cm and then cut the sheets into 12 squares.

Place the squares on a tray line of parchment paper, and separate each square with a square-shaped parchment paper. Keep them refrigerated as you prepare the cream cheese filling.

In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk, cream cheese, vanilla extract, and sugar until the mixture is soft and creamy.

You can display culinary skills by folding your puff pastry as you would like. The various designs range from simple to complex. Place a spoonful of the mixture on each sheet and pinch closed.

In a small mixing bowl, prepare your egg wash by beating one egg and mixing it with 2 tablespoons of water.

Use a pastry brush to coat the pastry before baking. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake your cheese Danish for 15 minutes until golden brown.

    The Process

Can I make my own puff pastry?

I love making food from scratch, that homemade taste will always stand out. When I have the time, I love making puff pastry and freezing it to use on a rainy day.

    Chef tips

A plate of Cheese Danish pastries with strawberries on it.
    • It is easy to work with pastry dough when it is chilled. Keep chilling the dough after rolling it out and cutting it into squares. When the cold pastry dough is placed in a preheated oven, distinct flaky layers will be formed.
    • Load the toppings when the cutout pastries are lined up on the baking tray. It will be a messy task trying to carry the pastry squares from one tray to the other when you have filled it with cream cheese and fruit filling.
    • Lastly, do not forget to coat your pastry with egg wash. Remember to grab your pastry brush and give your delightful pastries a shiny, pretty finish coat. It's one of the distinct characteristics of Danish pastries.
