About the recipe
These beautiful treats will definitely thrill your family and guests. I was highly motivated to prepare these Holiday Rice Krispie Treats when I heard the children intended to share the goodies with a needy family!
Suitable For Occasions
Members of the school homemakers club in my house were bubbling with excitement.
Grandpa was visiting for the holiday, and the upcoming chefs were eager to display the skills they had been learning at the club to their essential guests! "I don't think Grandpa has ever tasted Rice Krispie Treats," the girls whispered to one another.
"He will make a good judge," replied the other. With all the colorful and edible decorations on the kitchen counters, the children were vividly delighted.
Little Cleaning
The children excitedly stirred the cream into Rice Krispies, which are very light and airy; this made the cereals spill onto the kitchen counter and a few on the floor.
However, it takes less than a minute to wipe the counter and sweep the floor.
"I can count the number of dishes we used. There are so few!" my son announced happily. A few dishes clean would enable them to leave the kitchen spic and span.
Culinary Art Session
The most exciting part of this recipe is decorating the treats!
I had made early preparations in anticipation of the season's recipe and bought some cake decorating supplies from a baking store.
Adding color, drizzling chocolate, dusting with sprinkles, and desiccated coconut totally got the young children fully involved. They were elated by beautiful edible treats.
The ingredients.
Rice Krispies
All other ingredients bind to the Rice Krispies. Rice Krispies form the primary structure of the treats. This recipe requires about 6 cups of the airy cereals.
Butter
Butter adds moisture to the rice Krispies, making them soft and chewy. In addition, butter gives the treats a rich milky flavor.
Marshmallows (preferably mini-sized)
These contain the sugar that sweetens the treats and the gelatin that becomes gooey, sticky, and stretchy when melted. This property binds the rice Krispies together.
Assorted Sprinkles and Food Color.
We used red and green sprinkles to decorate Holiday Rice Krispie Treats. We used Green and Red colors to capture the theme of the season.
Dark Chocolate and White Chocolate
These ingredients bring a sweet chocolatey flavor to the treats. Apart from the flavor, the dark chocolate is popularly used to create beautiful designs.
Lastly, we used melted chocolate to stick sprinkles on the Holiday Rice Krispie Treats.
Desiccated Coconut
This delicious ingredient blends beautifully with the treats by adding a tropical flavor and creating the effect of falling snowflakes!
Vanilla essence
Although adding this essence might be optional, it gives the Rice Krispies treats an exquisite aroma.
How To Make It
The recipe involves melting butter and marshmallows into a smooth-flowing cream.
The cream is poured into a round mixing bowl containing the Rice Krispies. Gently mix the Rice Krispies with the cream till all the Rice Krispies are coated by the cream.
Setting and decorating
Holiday Rice Krispie Treats take on many shapes and colors depending on the accessories or ingredients you have at hand. My kitchen team decided to color a batch of the mixture with forest green.
The green mixture was poured into a baking tin and allowed to set for two hours. We scooped the mixture into a number of cookie cutters placed on a chopping board to get various shapes. The mixture stuffed into the cookie cutters was set aside to sit for the same period.
After a two-hour-long break from the kitchen, all the little chefs came running back into the kitchen, eager to wind up their unique project.
We decided to cut the green-colored bar into rectangles, drizzle them with some melted chocolate, then sprinkle them with green and red sprinkles. Lastly, we dusted the plate with desiccated coconut.
Combine the rice krispies & molted butter in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
Gently mix the Rice Krispies with the cream.
Allow the mix to set for 2 hours.
Accessories use to shape the krispies.
The second batch of the rice krispies that had been stuffed in the cookie cutters set beautifully! Design ideas kept flowing.
We fully dipped some treats in melted dark chocolate; other designs called for halfway dipping, while others just simply drizzled over the treats.
Before the chocolate hardened, everyone took turns to creatively attach the green and red sprinkles in their own style and design!
The Equipment To Use
Saucepan: A heavy-based pan is a plus in the recipe as it ensures the butter and marshmallows do not burn quickly.
Spatula: an excellent tool for scraping all the creamy mixture from the mixing bowl, thereby not wasting any ingredients.
Mixing bowls; A wide round bowl is the best choice because mixing is easy, and none of the mixtures remain in the corners.
Baking tray and cookie cutters: A non-stick tray is suitable for setting as well as cookie cutters.
Chopping board: A sturdy chopping board is required to be used to cut out the desired shapes.
Kitchen tweezers or tongs: These small tools come in handy when delicately and creatively placing sprinkles and decorations on the Holiday Rice Krispie Treats.
Substitution
Marshmallows
Marshmallows are an essential ingredient since they act as a binding agent. However, other components, such as honey, maple syrup, date paste, or tamarind paste, could be used instead of marshmallows.
Butter
Butter adds moisture to the recipe. It can be substituted with coconut oil, peanut butter, or almond butter.
Rice Krispies
Rice Krispies form the most basic structure of the recipe. You can substitute them with toasted oats, cornflakes, or granola.
Rice Krispie Treats Preservation
Can you freeze?
Holiday Rice Krispie Treats freeze wonderfully. First, placing the cut-out treats on a tray lined with a baking sheet is advisable. Place the cut-out treats in your freezer overnight. The following day,
remove the treats and carefully put them in a ziplock bag. They can freeze for about three months.
How to Store
The Holiday Rice Krispie should be stored in an airtight container and the refrigerator. Though as tasty and cute as they are, the little ones might consume them too quickly, leaving you with none to freeze!
Frequently asked questions - FAQs.
It takes about 2 hours for the treats to set well.
It could probably take longer in climates with higher temperatures, such as 34 degrees Celsius, and high humidity levels as well.
If you reside in such areas, it is recommended to place your tray in the coolest part of your kitchen.
Any version of Rice Krispie Treats will fall apart when you put too many marshmallows or too much butter.
It is essential to find the correct ratio of marshmallows and butter to the rice Krispies. 2 cups of marshmallows is enough for 6 cups of Rice Krispies.
Any form of food color will change the consistency of the cream (melted marshmallow and butter).
Once this happens, the marshmallows do not set firmly. I would not recommend adding any food color to the mixture but instead use colored decorations such as chocolate, various cake decoration, or candies.
About two days in the refrigerator or in a cool place as long as they are sealed in an airtight container.
Expert Tips
Rice Krispies are very light and airy. It is helpful to remember to use the spatula while mixing gently; otherwise, most of the Rice Krispies will spill out of the bowl. Spilling causes a mess and wastage too.
It will be prudent to consider using a ruler to determine the length of each treat. Using a ruler will ensure the cut-out Holiday Rice Krispies Treats are the same size.
Decorating the Holiday Rice Krispies is an essential step in this recipe. To achieve neat results, it would be necessary to use a small-sized tong or kitchen tweezers.
