This is an exciting recipe with a sweet chocolaty flavor and is one of the best rice krispie treats I have made.

This recipe is inspired by a series of Rice Krispy recipes I have been making. Chocolate chips are a beautiful addition to recipes, be they cookies, brownies, or oat bars. I was eager to see the outcome and my children's reactions too.

I decided to serve them as simple desserts for my children on a Friday evening to usher in the weekend.

    Why this recipe

    Fast to make

This chocolate rice krispie treat recipe is excellent time-saving, and the assembly took less than 20 minutes. Having recently done a couple of rice Krispies treats recipes, I was quicker at executing the steps. The two hours required setting time flew past as I continued with other house chores.

    Little cleaning

There was a great relief since we found a few dishes waiting at the sink at the end of the recipe. There is little cleaning to be done as the mixture is messy or sticky.

However, I realized that the semi-sweet chocolate chips could quickly melt and smudge. To avoid a lot of chocolatey mess, chill the equipment before use. Or perhaps call the little ones to enjoy licking the spatula!

What is the surprise this time?

My children are very fond of chocolate. They are always thrilled by chocolate cake and brownies; just anything with chocolate is always welcome.

That is how I came up with the idea of making chocolate chip rice Krispies. Since I discovered the Rice Krispy treats, making various versions and adding different flavors and textures has become very exciting.

The children keep looking forward to the following recipe with new surprises in the Rice Krispies. And Vuala! The chocolate enthusiasts were eager to indulge in the new chocolate-filled cereal treats. Chocolate chips add a sweet flavor that deliciously melts in their mouths.

    The ingredients are :

Chocolate Rice Krispies ingredients in glass bowls.

    Rice Krispies

All other ingredients bind to the Rice Krispies. They form the primary structure of the treats. This recipe requires about 4 cups of the airy cereals.

    Butter

Butter adds moisture to the Rice Krispies, making them soft and chewy. The butter gives the treats a rich milky flavor.

    Marshmallows (preferably mini-sized)

These contain the sugar that sweetens the treats and the gelatin that becomes gooey, sticky, and stretchy when melted. This property binds the Rice Krispies together.

    Chocolate chips

This ingredient adds beautiful color contrast, texture, and sweet chocolatey flavor to the Rice Krispy cereal treats.

They are small in size, making them easy to attach with the other ingredients and set well. Chocolate chips are a popular ingredient in most stores' baking sections.

    Vanilla essence

Although adding this essence might be optional, it brings in a rich vanilla flavor that compliments the chocolate flavor, giving the baked treats an exquisite aroma.

Note: If you use unsalted butter, you could sprinkle a pinch of salt while combining the marshmallow spread and the Rice Krispies.

    Steps Involved

    Melted butter in a pan.

Melt the butter over medium-low heat.

Butter cream being poured onto Rice Krispies in a glass bowl.

Pour the cream into the rice krispies.

Rice Krispies and melted butter in a glass bowl.

Mix the cream with the Krispies.

Chocolate Rise Krispies on a baking tray.

Toss in a cup of chocolate chips and spread on a baking tray.

The recipe involves melting butter and marshmallows into a smooth-flowing cream. The cream is poured into a bowl of Krispies. All the ingredients are mixed till all Rice Krispies are coated with the cream.

The mixture is transferred into a tray and gently pressed on the tray with the spatula.

    More About The Equipment

Saucepan: a heavy-based pan or a large pot is a plus in the recipe as it ensures the butter and marshmallows do not burn quickly.

Spatula: a great tool in ensuring none of the creamy mixture remains in the bowl, thereby not wasting any ingredients.

Mixing bowl; a wide round bowl is the best choice because mixing is made easy, and none of the mixture remains in the corners as would in a square mixing bowl.

Baking tray: a 5-inch rectangular non-stick shallow pan was ideal for the amount of mixture

Chopping board: A sturdy chopping board is required as the solid bar is divided into sizable squares. Preferably you can cut the treats while still in the pan.

Knife: a sharp knife ensures neat borders surrounding each piece cut out.

    Substitution

Rice Krispies in a glass bowl with a spatula.

    Marshmallows

Marshmallows are a vital ingredient since they act as a binding agent. However, there are other ingredients, such as honey, maple syrup, date paste, or even tamarind paste, that could be used.

    Butter

Butter adds moisture to the recipe. It can be substituted with coconut oil, peanut butter, or almond butter.

    Chocolate chips

These ingredients give the name to the recipe; however, if you are not a fan of chocolate, you could use ingredients such as raisins, chopped dates, or chopped orange peel.

    Rice Krispies

Rice Krispies form the most significant part of the recipe. They can be substituted with toasted oats, cornflakes, or granola.

    Chocolate Rice Krispies Treats Preservation

    Can you freeze?

My recipe tasters gobbled everything in less than two days. It was an excellent school snack.

But in case you need to make a huge batch ahead of an upcoming picnic or potluck, the treats freeze beautifully.

First, it's advisable to cut them into your desired shapes and place them on baking paper or a sheet. Place the cut-out treats in your freezer overnight.

The following day, remove the sweet treats and carefully put them in a ziplock bag. They can freeze for about three months.

    How to Store

The Chocolate chips and Rice Krispie treats should be stored in an airtight container and placed in the refrigerator. Though as exquisite as they taste, the little ones consumed in less than two days.

    FAQs

Why are my Chocolate chip Rice Krispies falling apart?

Rice Krispie treats fall apart when you put too many marshmallows or too much butter.
It is essential to find the correct ratio of marshmallows and butter to the Rice Krispies. 2 cups of marshmallows is enough for 6 cups of Rice Krispies.

How long can you keep Chocolate Chip Rice Krispies treats?

About two days in the refrigerator or in a cool place as long as they are sealed in an airtight container.
Since this version contains chocolate chip surprises in them, it will quickly melt under high temperatures.

How long does it take for the Rice Krispies to set?

It takes about 2 hours for these easy treats to set well.
It could probably take longer in climates with higher temperatures, such as 34 degrees Celsius, and high humidity levels as well.
If you reside in such areas, it is recommended to place your tray in the coolest part of your kitchen.

    Expert Tips

Rice Krispies are very light and airy. It is essential to remember to use the spatula while mixing gently; otherwise, most of the Rice Krispies will spill out of the bowl. This causes a mess and wastage too.

Chocolate chips have a tendency to melt, especially after getting in contact with melted butter and marshmallows.

Once they begin to soften, the bars will crumble, and the contract in color will not be achieved. In order to fix this hitch, chill the spatula and the mixing bowl for an hour before use.
