Most squashes make good substitutes for zucchini. I specifically like chayote squash because of how nutritious it is. Chayote squash is quite popular in Latin and Asian countries. It has very tough skin. Therefore, you will need to peel it before using it as an alternative for zucchini

In terms of shape and size, zucchini and chayote squash do not look alike. However, its flavor is similar to that of zucchini. Chayote squash has a mildly sweet flavor that is pleasing to many.

I suggest using chayote squash as a substitute mostly because it is easy to work with thanks to the fact that it has no seeds. The texture of patty pane is the same as that of zucchini which is why it can easily replace zucchini.

Patty pan is an easy to use substitute. There is absolutely no need to peel it. All you need to do is wash it with lots of water and trim the ends.

Zucchini has always been a summer favorite because of how you can use it in many dishes. Unfortunately, it is not an all-year-round squash. This does not mean that you can’t enjoy zucchini recipes during winter or fall. There are several alternatives that you can use.

Most of these substitutes are relatively easy to use and also easy to find. Yellow squash, eggplant, patty pan, and cucumber do not need to be peeled before adding to your dish or salad.  

With chayote and pumpkin, you will need to peel before use because of the very tough skin.
